This
is an old Monogram 72nd scale kit from the 70ties, re-scribed and upgraded to
some extent with Eduard PE interior set, CMK resin MG15s and True Details overly
bulged yet threaded wheels. It was brush-painted RLM 70/71/65 (added some
15-20% flat white, for scale effect) with Tamiya & Gunze acrylics. Since
15/KG53 used their Do17Z-s throughout their legionare Luftwaffe deployment which
included close to 2000 sorties on the Eastern front, the model was heavily
weathered with dry pastels, toothpick paint chips etc. Some detail was
added to the upgraded Bramo 323P engines with brass wire&resin leftovers,
the canopy (hand holders and field of fire limitators, dive level sight etc).

The
depicted plane, A1+CZ was from 15/Croat.KG53, based at Butmir-Sarajevo airbase
and shot down by Spitfires of 92Sqn RAF/RCAF on the 10.10.1943 over Adriatic
Sea. During this brief but fierce encounter one Spifire was brought down
and several others damaged by return-fire from the Dornier. Three out of four
Dornier crewmembers survived and were rescued by RAF flying boats in search for
the downed Canadian pilot. The idea behind this project was for it to be a
present for an actual pilot of the depicted aircraft, whom I've had the
privilege to get to know in person, during the last summer on his visit to
Croatia.
