Kit:  Academy 1/72 MiG-27 Flogger D

Kit #:  1654

The kit is cleanly molded in light gray styrene with delicate engraved panel lines. The parts are well done and the surfaces are smooth. Construction began with the cockpit assembly. The cockpit is relatively inadequate with a seat which is rather simplified. Decal is provided for the oversimplified instrument panel. No mention was made of adding nose weight. At that time I was overwhelmed with doing my first ever “serious” plane modeling that I forgot also to add weight up front!! Parts went together nicely; little putty and sanding were required. The wheel-well details are basic for the scale. Missiles and bombs are pretty poorly detailed and really just shapes. The clear parts are crisp, thin and well-molded. No hydraulic pushrods were provided for posing the canopy in the raised position; therefore, no changes were made in this area. Another reason posing my model’s canopy that way was to not show the interior details which were rather scarce.

The entire camouflage scheme was painted free-hand using Tamiya acrylic paints, XF-61 Dark Green and XF-52 Flat Earth; with the undersurface, this time using Mr. Color 308 Gray. The exhaust areas were painted Gun Metal.

The kit was then sprayed with Clear Gloss in preparation for the decals. I used a little Mark Setter and a little Mark Softer to tighten down all the markings. Thinned Black enamel wash was next just enough to bring out the panel lines. I airbrushed Mr. Color Clear Gloss all over the model to seal those decals down good and hide the irregularities in the paint surfaces before the flat coat for the final finish.
