The original model
kit was a 1/144 Dragon MIG-29A Fulcrum. I received this as a present as
this brand in this scale is no longer available in Singapore. This kit
comes with decals for an East German MIG-29 with aircraft No. 604 from
Jagd Geschwader , Vladimir, Komarow. I saw the performance of the TUDM
MIG-29N at the Singapore Air Show 2012 and decided to modify this kit to
depict a MIG-29N instead. By the way TUDM stands for Tentera Udara Di-Raja
Malaysia in Malay which in English is Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).
The kit is pretty
detailed and fits well in most areas during assembly. A little filling up
and sanding is necessary for the closed undercarriage doors as I built my
kit in in-flight position. The only additions that I had to scratch built
are the following:-

I created the decals for
aircraft No. M43-10 belonging to the Cobra 19 SKN (Squadron in Malay) stationed
in Kuantan AB. Another squadron of MIG29N comes under the Bat 17 SKN. These two
squadrons have been merged following the induction of the Sukhoi Su-30MKM into
its inventory upgrade.
I painted the model a standard all round dark gray tone carried by the MIG-29N in its latest colour scheme. The earlier colour scheme was the standard Russian scheme of Gray/Gray Green on the upper surfaces. The shade of gray is quite similar to the Gunship Gray. As usual, I used the basic acrylic colours to mix instead of using the original shade from Tamiya or Mr Hobby given the size of the kit. A basic wash was done to give it some weathering
I had to rush a little for this kit as I wanted it in time to commemorate Malaysia’s Independence Day which falls on 31 August.
Enjoy!!!
