This is my 1/48 Tamiya Spitfire Mk.IIa finished with the markings of “421 Flight” from RAF Hawkinge.

RAF Hawkinge is a former Royal Air Force station located in Kent, near to the south coast and the closest airfield to the French coast. The airfield was used by both the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force during its lifetime.

“No 421 Flight” was formed near the end of the Battle of Britain and arrived at Hawkinge on November 15th 1940. In January 1941 was renamed No 91 squadron. This special outfit had six Spitfire IIA’s and its task was to track incoming formations and report on their composition and altitude.

This Mk.II flown by Sqd Ldr Charles Greene inherited “LZ” code letters of No 66 Squadron from which it formed, but with a square dot separating the two letters. Green was credited with 2 enemy aircraft destroyed and 2 probably destroyed by the end of 1940 while serving with No 421 flight.

The base model of this project is Tamiya Spitfire Mk Ia..

The construction started with the painting of cockpit components to RAF interior green and the seat to bakelite colour as usual. The cockpit area is modified with the following parts:

  • Eduard PE instrument panel

  • Ultracast Spitfire early type resin seat with Sutton harness # 48199

  • Cutting Edge GM2 gunsight

To convert Tamiya Mk.I to Mk.II version I used Ultracast “Rotol 3 blades propeller” and “Blunt spinner” set #48113 . “Coffman starter blister” seen on right side of the nose already included in this set.

Other modifications are:

  • Ultracast #48214 cockpit door without crowbar & fittings

  • Ultracast #48040 Spitfire MkI exhaust

  • The elevators from Ultracast # 48038 Spitfire MkI Control surfaces set.

The painting was done with Gunze Sangyo acrylics.
Upper surfaces are painted to RAF dark green / dark earth and the underside to the RAF sky duck green.

The decals are from “Aeromaster Battle of Britain Part 2” # 48680

Happy Modelling
