Although
I normally limit my model building to aircraft in units which are currently
active, I couldn’t resist a USN Phantom. This is the excellent Hasegawa
kit. For extras, I added Eduard PE including interior, air brakes, and a
separate set for the intake FOD covers. The FOD cover set came with two
pairs of covers, so you could use it for a second Phantom (or sell it on E-bay
like I did). The exhausts were from Aires. I also added resin seats
from Verlinden.

I
build this one with very little detailing other than the aftermarket sets.
This kit was actually sort of a break; so I didn’t bother with the
tedious painting and decaling of weapons. Between work on more
difficult or involved projects I’ll normally try to find a better
engineered kit (like a relatively new Hasegawa) to just put together
quickly. This kit took about two months—which is really quick for
me given that I work on models only one or two days a week normally.
The
decals came from an old SuperScale set. The model was airbrushed with
several shades of Tamiya acrylics to create the typical faded appearance of the
grey Phantoms. Brush painting of details was done mostly with
Polly-S/Model Master acrylics.
